Your Brain Has a Movement Map. How Much of Yours Is Colored In?
Your brain has a movement map.
Think of it as a map containing all of the different movements, positions, and movement combinations the human body is capable of accessing. Squatting, reaching, rotating, bending, extending, shifting, balancing, crawling, hanging, jumping, throwing, climbing, and thousands of combinations in between.
Now imagine an optimal human movement map broadly drawn and vividly colored. The drawn areas represent movements the nervous system has been exposed to and recognizes as available possibilities. The depth of color represents familiarity: movements that have been practiced enough for the nervous system to access, coordinate, and control with increasing proficiency.
In this way, movement variety draws the map, while movement repetition colors it in.
The human body begins with tremendous movement potential, but the map that develops throughout life reflects the movements it actually experiences. Some areas become deeply colored through years of repeated use. Others may be faintly outlined from occasional exposure, while some remain largely gray because those movements have rarely been explored.
This isn’t a literal anatomical map sitting inside the brain, of course. It’s a useful way of understanding something very real about the nervous system: movement experience influences which movements become familiar, accessible, and well coordinated.
If the goal is to remain mobile, strong, athletic, adaptable, and physically capable throughout life, one of the primary goals of movement becomes remarkably simple:
Draw the map. Color it in. Keep it vibrant.

The Human Body Has an Enormous Movement Vocabulary
Consider how many ways the human body is capable of moving.
The shoulder can flex, extend, abduct, adduct, internally rotate, externally rotate, and combine those motions in varying degrees. The scapula can elevate, depress, retract, protract, and rotate around the rib cage. The spine can flex, extend, rotate, laterally flex, and combine those movements across multiple segments. Then add the hips, knees, ankles, feet, elbows, wrists, hands, neck, rib cage, and pelvis.
Now combine them.
A squat changes when the feet change position, the body shifts toward one side, the trunk rotates, or an arm reaches overhead. Add changes in speed, direction, load, balance, and the body’s relationship to gravity, and the number of potential movement solutions expands even further.
Every joint provides possibilities, and every combination creates another way for the body to interact with its environment.
The potential map is enormous.
Your Nervous System Colors What You Practice
The nervous system is constantly learning from movement.
Every time the body moves into a position, sensory receptors provide information about joint position, muscle length and tension, pressure, balance, and the body’s relationship to its environment. The nervous system processes that information, coordinates an appropriate muscular response, and continually refines its strategy.
This ability to change in response to experience is known as neuroplasticity, and when applied to acquiring and refining physical skills, it contributes to motor learning.
Consider learning any unfamiliar physical skill. Initially, the movement often feels awkward and requires considerable concentration. With practice, the pieces begin working together more efficiently. The movement becomes smoother, more accurate, and eventually requires far less conscious thought.
The anatomy didn’t suddenly change. The nervous system became more proficient at organizing the movement.
This is what it means to color an area of the movement map. A movement practiced thousands of times may become deeply ingrained, while one encountered only occasionally remains relatively unfamiliar.
The nervous system becomes good at organizing the movements it is repeatedly asked to perform.
A Larger Movement Map Gives You More Solutions
Human movement is essentially a continuous series of problems for the nervous system to solve.
Reach for something on a high shelf. Step over an object. Catch your balance. Pick something awkward up from the ground. Throw a ball. Change direction quickly. Each task presents a physical problem, and the nervous system organizes a movement strategy using the options it has available.
The larger the usable movement map, the more potential solutions it has to choose from.
Even reaching toward the floor can involve different combinations of motion through the hips, knees, ankles, spine, and pelvis, along with changes in stance and weight distribution. There isn’t necessarily one correct solution. The body can organize itself differently depending on the task and environment.
When fewer movement options are available, however, the nervous system has fewer strategies from which to choose. The body may increasingly rely on a smaller collection of familiar movement patterns to accomplish many different tasks.
This is where pattern overload can begin to matter.
Repetition itself isn’t the problem; it is necessary for learning, strength, and skill. But repeatedly solving different physical demands through the same limited strategies can concentrate stress through the same joints, tissues, and movement patterns again and again.
A broader movement map gives the body alternatives.
More movement available means more ways to solve the problem.
Movement Variety Draws the Map
If repetition colors the movement map, variety expands its borders.
Every new position, direction, movement combination, or physical task gives the nervous system new information to interpret and organize. Change the position of the feet during a familiar movement, reach in an unfamiliar direction, move laterally instead of forward, or learn a new physical skill, and the nervous system encounters a different problem to solve.
This doesn’t mean every movement needs to be novel. Constant novelty without repetition would create a map with plenty of faint outlines but very little depth. Variety draws new territory while repetition develops proficiency within it.
Expanding the map also doesn’t require collecting hundreds of exercises. A familiar movement can provide new information simply by changing its range, direction, speed, stance, load, or relationship to gravity. Walking over uneven terrain requires different adjustments than walking on a treadmill. Reaching across the body creates a different problem than reaching directly overhead. Moving slowly through an unfamiliar position presents a different challenge than moving quickly through a familiar one.
The goal isn’t randomness. It is movement diversity.
Play Is One of the Easiest Ways to Expand the Map
One of the easiest ways to introduce more movement variety has almost nothing to do with exercise.
Play.
Watch children move through the world and this becomes obvious. A curb becomes a balance beam. The floor becomes somewhere to roll, crawl, wrestle, and find creative ways to stand back up. A low wall becomes something to climb over. A puddle becomes something to jump across. Objects get thrown, caught, kicked, carried, climbed onto, ducked underneath, and balanced on.
From a movement perspective, play is remarkably productive because the task continually changes. The body has to adjust its position, balance, direction, speed, and strategy in response.
Adults tend to lose much of this incidental movement variety. Movement becomes increasingly utilitarian: walk to the car, sit at work, carry the groceries, complete the workout, take the shortest route from one place to another. Physical activity may still be present, but exploration often disappears.
Bringing some of it back can be as simple as walking along a curb like a tightrope, rolling around on the floor, finding an unusual route back to standing, tossing something with the nondominant hand, balancing while waiting around, or stepping over an obstacle instead of walking around it.
None of these movements are individually magical or corrective. Their value is in the variety itself.
More importantly, play changes the way the environment is perceived. Once the world starts looking like a collection of opportunities to move rather than simply something to move through, opportunities to expand the map begin appearing everywhere.
Color the Map
The movement map will never be finished.
New experiences introduce territory. Repetition develops proficiency within it. Continued exposure helps keep those movements familiar and available.
The broader the map, the more movement options the body has to adapt to changing demands. Fewer options can mean greater reliance on the same familiar patterns, increasing the potential for pattern overload and the aches, pains, and irritation that can follow.
For movement, wellness, and longevity, the goal isn’t to complete the map.
The goal is to keep drawing, keep coloring, and keep it vibrant.
